Cambridge ESOL Exams Details

There are various levels of ESOL examinations including KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE. Below are some details about these 5 exams:

KET (Key English Test)
This test falls within Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases
  • introduce themselves and answer basic questions about your personal details
  • interact with English speakers who talk slowly and clearly.

The KET evaluates reading, listening and speaking skills and comprises three sections:
· Reading and Writing
· Listening
· Speaking

PET (Preliminary English Test)
This test falls within Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • Understand the main points of straightforward instructions or public announcements
  • Deal with most of the situations you might meet when traveling as a tourist in an English-speaking country
  • Ask simple questions and take part in factual conversations in a work environment
  • Write letters or make notes on familiar matters.

The PET evaluates reading, listening and speaking skills and comprises three sections:
· Reading and Writing
· Listening
· Speaking

FCE (First Certificate in English)
This test falls within Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • Understand the essential message contained in texts describing practical and abstract subjects and take an active role in a technical discussion within the scope of their own specialty.
  • Express themselves spontaneously and fluently as part of a normal conversation with mother tongue speakers without either party having to make any special effort.
  • Express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide variety of subjects.
  • Be able to discuss news items and examine the benefits and drawbacks of particular situations.

The FCE is divided into five sections
· Reading and Writing
· Listening
· English in use
· Speaking

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
This examination falls within Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • Read quickly enough to cope with an academic course
  • Understand complex opinions
  • Produce clear, well structured and detailed pieces of writing
  • Express themselves well with a good degree of fluency
  • Use English flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes

The CAE is divided into five sections
· Reading and Writing
· Listening
· English in use
· Speaking

CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
This examination falls within Level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At this level of ability, candidates are expected to be able to:

  • Understand with ease virtually everything they hear and read
  • Make accurate and complete notes during a presentation
  • Understand colloquial asides
  • Talk about complex and sensitive issues without awkwardness
  • Express themselves precisely and fluently

The CPE examination includes five components:
· Reading and Writing
· Listening
· English in use
· Speaking
